Ovarian cysts are extremely common. Each month a woman’s ovary produces a follicle with a developing egg. Often times, after a woman ovulates, the follicle re-seals and accumulates fluid forming a cyst. Ovarian cysts can be normal or abnormal and your physician will help to determine if you need treatment or observation. Sometimes ovarian cysts are related to endometriosis and more rarely to ovarian cancer. Your physician may order an ultrasound or blood tests to further determine the course of treatment. Sometimes surgery is required to treat ovarian cysts.
