MonaLisa Touch Q & A

What vaginal condition is treated by the MonaLisa Touch?

A condition called vulvo-vaginal atrophy occurs when levels of estrogen drop during menopause. Although vaginal atrophy is most common in postmenopausal women, low estrogen may also be caused by other conditions, such as women receiving treatment for breast and ovarian cancer.

Vaginal atrophy causes thinning, drying, and inflammation of the vaginal walls. If you have this condition, you may experience symptoms such as:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Vaginal burning and itching
  • Vaginal laxity
  • Painful intercourse
  • Bleeding after intercourse
  • Less lubrication during intercourse
  • Burning during urination
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Frequent urinary tract infections

How does MonaLisa Touch restore vaginal health?

The MonaLisa Touch uses a fractional CO2 laser to precisely target tissues in the vaginal wall. The warmth from the laser painlessly stimulates collagen and new blood vessel production.

New collagen improves the tone and texture of the vaginal wall, reversing vaginal atrophy and laxity. The laser treatment also naturally increases blood flow and lubrication in the vagina. The MonaLisa Touch treatment also helps to restore beneficial normal bacteria (lactobaccilli) in the vagina to restore the normal acidic vaginal pH balance. The combined result is relief from symptoms and restored vaginal health.

What happens during a treatment session with the MonaLisa Touch?

Treatment with MonaLisa Touch is virtually painless, but a numbing cream can be applied to ensure your comfort during the procedure. The laser treatment is performed using a small device that Dr. Mahller inserts into your vagina.

The procedure only takes about five minutes; then you can get back to your routine. You may have slight redness or swelling, but that resolves itself in 1-2 days. You’ll also need to abstain from sexual intercourse for two days.

When will you notice results?

Some women report feeling improvement after one treatment. However, it often takes a few weeks for the vaginal lining to produce new collagen. When three MonaLisa Touch treatments are administered over 12 weeks, they produce long-lasting results that only need one yearly treatment to maintain.

Does the MonaLisa Touch treat other gynecologic conditions?

The MonaLisa Touch relieves urinary frequency and incontinence associated with vaginal atrophy. Fractional CO2 lasers may also help treat a condition called lichen sclerosus, which affects the skin around the genitalia and causes symptoms similar to vaginal atrophy, including thin skin, itching, and painful intercourse. However, the MonaLisa Touch is currently FDA cleared to treat vaginal atrophy.
